Weight gain can be a vicious circle. Eating too much can cause feelings of guilt and unhappiness. And the more unhappy and anxious we become, the more we eat. If you want to lose weight you must escape this unhealthy cycle.
When it comes down to it, healthy weight loss requires two simple things - a healthy diet and regular exercise. Many people try to lose weight with restrictive diets but I do not recommend these. Restrictive diets set you up to fail.
Restrictive dieting usually requires you to make sudden, dramatic changes to your eating habits that are usually unsustainable. Unfortunately, the feeling of failure creeps in and leaves us feeling worse than when we started to lose weight. This kind of failure does little to boost your confidence.
Also, restrictive diets, by their nature, deprive us of many of the foods we enjoy and it can come as a sudden shock going from eating what you want one day to a very limited diet the next. This sense of deprivation make make dieting a very difficult task.
But losing weight doesn't have to be that difficult. If you take a balanced approach and take it at your own pace it need not be that difficult. You need to lose weight in a manner that you can sustain in the long-term. If you take it one step at a time you can make the changes necessary to lose weight without it being overwhelming.
These need not be major changes. In fact, small changes are a better idea at the start. You need to be able to take any changes you make to you diet or exercise schedule in your stride. You could try eating a piece of fruit instead of having biscuits or cake with your tea or coffee. This may seem like a sacrifice, but it is a small one and the benefits are big. Give it a little time and it will feel like a natural part of your life. Even though it is just a small change, it will probably leave you looking and feeling noticeably better.
But this is only the start. When you become comfortable with one change, it is time to make another. Maybe this change will involve you getting more exercise. So, you could start by simply taking a short walk every day. Again, this should feel like a normal part of your daily routine after a couple of weeks and you can decide on another small change to make. There is still a long way to go, but you should already be feeling the benefits of the small changes you have made.
You need to develop the right habits to lose weight successfully. Once these habits become natural to you, you should be able to reach and maintain your desired weight with little effort.
It is important to keep track of the progress you are making and to celebrate your achievements regularly. It can be too easy to forget about what you have achieved so keep reminding yourself how well you are doing. Positive thinking is key, so be sure not to focus on what you didn't do so well.
It could be a good idea to keep a journal where you can write down what you have achieved and how much weight you have lost, or it could even be a simple thing like keeping a list on the fridge. This will remind you of what you have achieved when you need encouragement in the future.
More than anything else, breaking bad habits that you have had for a long time is all about your frame of mind. You need to stay in a positive frame of mind so do not leave any negative thoughts creep in. If you can keep a positive outlook on losing weight you will almost certainly be successful.
So, if you think "It doesn’t matter what I do, I never lose weight" or "I’ve always been like this" you will find it much more difficult to lose weight. However, if you think "There is no reason why I shouldn't be slim" or "I enjoy eating well and excrcising regularly", then your chances of success will be much, much higher.
From my experience there in only one person who can come up with the ideal weight loss plan for you, and that person for you. You will have to set goals that you can achieve comfortably and at your own pace.
This is a much better idea than following a weight loss plan that was drawn up by someone else. The only person who knows your wants and needs is you, so you need to lose weight in a way that suits you.
It is impossible to get everything 100 per cent right. It is quite possible that you could slip up and eat something you shouldn't eat or stop exercising for a couple of days. Don't beat yourself up about it as it's not that big a deal. Just pick up where you left off and resume your healthy eating and exercising habits. Also, try to identify what caused you to lose focus on your new diet. Stress, worry, boredom and other negative emotions can often cause us to overeat or become lethargic. If you can identify what made you overeat or stop exercising you have a good chance of preventing it from happening in the future.
However, maintaining this motivation for months, or even years, can be a different matter. However, maintaining this motivation in the long-term can be very difficult. This could be things like increased self confidence, the clothes you will be able to wear, or just feeling healthy. Write these down and put them somewhere you can read them again when you begin to feel de-motivated. This should help you when it all seems like too much.
